Internship, externship, practicum, student clinic — different programs use different words for the same requirement. Before Tennessee licenses a massage therapist, that person has to log supervised hands-on hours with real clients, and somebody has to be the client.
That's what the Healing Hands internship clinic is. Massage therapy students complete those hours in our Farragut and Cedar Bluff treatment rooms, supervised by a licensed massage therapist, and guests book the hour at $60 for relaxation work or $70 for deep tissue.

Student Relaxing Massage — 60 minutes — $60
A full-body relaxation massage to ease everyday stress and general muscle tension, performed by a massage therapy student under licensed supervision.
Student Deep Tissue Massage — 60 minutes — $70
Firmer, slower work for chronic tightness, using deeper techniques within the student's level of training and under licensed supervision.

Practicing on fellow students only goes so far. The hours that count toward licensure are the ones with a stranger's body, a real intake form and a real request.
Hours Logged in a Working Spa
Students learn the job as it's actually done — a booked schedule, a front desk, turnaround between guests, a room to reset. That's harder to simulate on a campus.

What supervised clinical hours are
A massage therapy program is part classroom and part table. The classroom covers anatomy, physiology, contraindications, ethics, sanitation and draping. The table is where all of that either becomes usable or doesn't.
The final stretch of most programs requires hands-on hours with members of the public, supervised and documented. Those hours are the last gate before licensure in Tennessee, and they can't be faked or substituted — which is why student clinics exist everywhere there are massage schools.
The practical result for you is a real massage at a rate that's below market, because the appointment is worth something to the student beyond the money.
Where a student is by the time they're on your schedule
Not at the beginning. By the point a student is taking public clinic appointments, they've been through the coursework and been evaluated on it — draping, positioning, communication, sanitation, contraindications, and the actual techniques for the services they're cleared to perform.
What they're still building is the part no classroom teaches: reading a body they've never touched, pacing an hour so it doesn't run out at the calves, adjusting when a guest says "a little lighter" in a tone that actually means "much lighter."
That's the honest picture. Solid fundamentals, less mileage. For a straightforward hour of relaxation or general tension work, that's usually plenty. For a complicated back and a decade of history with it, book a licensed therapist.
What your appointment actually contributes
A documented, supervised hour with a real guest, plus something more useful than that: an unfamiliar body with unfamiliar problems and its own opinions about pressure.
It's also the professional context. Arriving on time for a booked schedule, reading an intake, explaining a plan in plain language, staying inside scope, resetting a room, handling the moment a guest asks for something they can't do — those are all part of the job, and they're only learnable on a live schedule.
If you want to make the hour count for more, give one specific piece of feedback at the end. It's voluntary, and it's worth more to someone in training than a page of instructor notes.
Internship, externship, student clinic — the words
People search all of these and mean roughly the same thing, so it's worth untangling. "Internship" and "externship" usually describe a placement at an outside business, which is what this is. "Practicum" or "student clinic" more often describes hours logged on campus. Programs use them inconsistently.
What matters for you as a guest is only this: a massage therapy student performs the session, a licensed therapist supervises it, and the rate is $60 or $70 for a full 60 minutes. Whatever the paperwork calls it, that's the arrangement.

Some of the traffic to a phrase like this is students, not guests. If that's you: placements are arranged between the spa and the schools whose students we host, not through the booking line.

Booking a clinic appointment as a guest
By phone, at either location, asking for the Student Clinic by name. There's no online option — training blocks move week to week and the front desk has to match you to a student who's scheduled and cleared for the service you want.
A card holds the reservation. Cancellations need 12 hours' notice, inside that there's a $50 fee, and no-shows are charged the full value — the same terms that protect any limited schedule. Arrive 10 minutes early for the intake form.

What is a massage internship clinic?
It's a program where massage therapy students complete the supervised hands-on hours required before licensure, by taking real appointments with members of the public. At Healing Hands those hours happen in our Farragut and Cedar Bluff treatment rooms under a licensed massage therapist, at $60 for a 60-minute relaxing massage or $70 for deep tissue.
Are massage interns the same as students?
In practice, yes. Programs use "intern", "extern", "practicum student" and "clinic student" for the same requirement. Either way the person performing your massage is a massage therapy student who is not yet licensed, working under the supervision of a licensed therapist.
How far along in training is the student?
Far enough to have completed the coursework and been evaluated on it — anatomy, contraindications, draping, sanitation, communication and the techniques for the services they're cleared to perform. Public clinic appointments come at the end of a program, not the start.
Is the massage shorter or simpler because it's an internship session?
No. It's a full 60 minutes, in a private treatment room, with the same draping, linens and sanitation as any other appointment here. The menu is narrower — relaxation and deep tissue only — because students perform only what their training covers.
Do I have to give feedback?
No, it's voluntary. If you do, specific comments about pressure, pacing, communication and comfort are the most useful. Those are things a student can actually change next week; general praise is nice but doesn't teach anything.
Can I do my massage therapy clinical hours at Healing Hands?

Does the intern get to keep the money?
The rate reflects the educational nature of the program rather than a therapist's service fee. What the student gets out of it is the supervised, documented hour — which is the thing they can't buy and can't skip.
Why can't I book this online?
Because clinic hours only exist while students are scheduled for supervised training, and those blocks shift week to week. The front desk needs to match you to a student who is both scheduled and cleared for the service you want, which the online calendar can't do.
Is this available at both Knoxville locations?
Yes, at Farragut on Kingston Pike and Cedar Bluff off I-40/I-75 exit 378, though openings depend on where students are placed that week. Ask the front desk to check both — one often has an opening the other doesn't.
