What the Student Massage Clinic actually is

Before a massage therapist can be licensed in Tennessee, they have to log supervised hands-on hours with real clients — not classmates, not mannequins. Most schools handle that with an on-campus clinic. We handle it inside a working spa, which is the whole reason this program exists.

So your appointment does two things at once. You get an affordable massage; a student gets a documented hour of supervised practice with a paying guest who has real shoulders and a real week behind them. That trade is the honest reason the price is $60 instead of what we normally charge.

Who's actually in the room

A massage therapy student performs the massage. They are not a licensed massage therapist yet — that's the point of the hours — and we won't describe them as one. A licensed therapist supervises the clinic, is on site, and is who the student goes to with a question or a situation outside their scope.

The supervising therapist doesn't stand in the room during your session. Your massage is private, the same as any other appointment here, and no one observes it.

Why it costs less

The lower rate reflects the educational nature of the program, not a shorter service or a stripped-down room. You still get the full hour, the private room, the intake, the draping and the linens.

What you're trading is experience and choice. The student is early in their career, the menu is two services instead of twenty, and you can't request a specific therapist. If those trade-offs don't work for what you need, our regular menu is right there.

The two services, and how to choose

There are exactly two options in the clinic. Both are 60 minutes, both are performed by a student under licensed supervision, and both take place in a private room at whichever location has the opening.

Student Relaxing Massage — 60 minutes, $60

Full-body relaxation work, moderate pressure, aimed at general stress and everyday muscle tension. This is the one most first-timers should pick, and it's what we'd suggest if you've never had a professional massage before or you just want to switch your brain off for an hour.

If you're comparing, it's the student-clinic counterpart to a standard Swedish massage.

Student Deep Tissue Massage — 60 minutes, $70

Slower strokes and firmer pressure aimed at chronic tightness — the trapezius knot that's been there since March, the low back after a week of desk work in Bearden or downtown.

One caveat worth saying plainly: a student works within the techniques and pressure their training covers, and the supervising therapist sets that limit. If you're someone who normally asks for the firmest pressure a therapist can give, book our regular deep tissue massage instead. You'll be happier and it's the honest recommendation.

Booking is by phone, and there's a reason

Student Clinic appointments don't appear on the online calendar. Clinic hours only exist while a student is scheduled for supervised training, and those blocks shift week to week as students move through their programs.

Calling lets our front desk look at both locations, see which students are on the schedule and what they're cleared to perform, and put you in a slot that actually fits. It also means nobody books a student deep tissue on a day when no student is authorized for it.

What your visit looks like, start to finish

Plan to arrive about 10 minutes before your appointment time to fill out the intake form. That's where you flag health conditions, injuries, medications, pregnancy, and anywhere you'd rather not be touched.

Before the massage

Your student practitioner reads the intake, then talks with you about pressure and where you want the time spent. Say what you actually want here — this is the part guests skip and then regret 40 minutes in. They'll step out while you get on the table and under the sheet.

Both locations have free parking right at the door. No garage, no stairs.

During the massage

Professional draping the whole time; only the area being worked on is uncovered. You can ask for more or less pressure at any point, ask them to skip an area, ask for the room warmer, or end the session early. None of that is rude and all of it is normal.

If something feels off and you'd rather talk to the supervising therapist, say so. They're on site for exactly that.

The policies people ask about

None of these are unusual for a spa, but the clinic is a limited program, so they're enforced consistently.

• Cancellations, changes and reschedules need at least 12 hours' notice.
• Changed or canceled inside 12 hours, there's a $50 cancellation fee. No-shows are charged the full appointment value.
• Arrive 10 minutes early for intake paperwork.

• Student Clinic pricing can't be combined with memberships, promotions, coupons or other discounts.
• Specific therapist requests aren't available — students are assigned by availability and training schedule.

When you should book a licensed therapist instead

The clinic is a good fit for general relaxation and ordinary muscle tension. It's not the right call for everything, and we'd rather tell you that now than have you spend $60 on the wrong appointment.

Book a licensed therapist from the regular menu if you're pregnant, recently had surgery, are working around an acute injury, need advanced deep-tissue work, or want a particular therapist you've seen before. Massage of any kind isn't medical care, and new, severe or unexplained pain belongs with a doctor first.

If you're weighing cost either way, the membership program is the other route to a lower per-visit price with a licensed therapist — one massage or facial a month starting at $89.
